About

Artistic journey

Esther Gronenborn’s visual art practice weaves together photographic collage, cinematic thinking, digital experimentation, and AI-generated moving images. After many years as a filmmaker and storyteller, she turned to landscape photography, which gradually evolved into intricate, layered photographic collages. Drawing on her filmic sensibility, she merges documentary fragments with painterly interventions and digital processes to create symbolic visual spaces that evoke memory, transformation, and the fragile entanglement of humans and nature.

Her work resonates with contemporary para-pastoral discourse. While classical pastoral imagery idealized nature as an untouched idyll, Gronenborn’s landscapes expose it as constructed, mediated, and emotionally charged. They become sites of projection, disturbance, longing, and uncertainty rather than scenes of uncomplicated retreat.

In parallel, AI has become a central axis of her creative journey. In her AI-generated films and large-scale video installations, Gronenborn explores the aesthetics, glitches, and narrative ambiguities that emerge from generative systems. She approaches AI not simply as a tool, but as a medium of inquiry — a mirror to human imagination, authorship, perception, and the shifting status of images in contemporary culture.

Across photography, collage, moving image, and AI, her work probes the fragile boundary between presence and disappearance, the real and the imagined, observation and construction. Her portfolio presents poetic yet disquieting image worlds that invite viewers to move beyond the surface and engage with the symbolic, emotional, and technological undercurrents of the image.
