Esther Gronenborn

Whether in the desert of Abu Dhabi or on the road to happiness in China, Esther Gronenborn has gained a lot of filming experience at home and abroad during her professional career. Whether as a music video director, in advertising or in feature films, her diverse works gain their power through authenticity and a special visuality. A graduate of the Munich Film Academy, she has been working as a freelance author and director since 1997. During her studies, she spent several semesters abroad in Hong Kong, China, England and Romania.

After graduating from the Munich Film Academy, she initially worked as a music video and commercial director for the Berlin-based production company DORO. Early projects such as Musik im Kopf and Meine kleine Schwester attracted widespread attention. Her feature film debut alaska.de premiered in 2001 and received numerous national and international awards, including the German Film Award (Lola) for Best Director and the Bavarian Film Prize. This was followed by acclaimed films such as Stadt als Beute and Ich werde nicht schweigen. Most recently, her television film The White Silence, about the hospital murderer Niels Högel, was nominated for the 2022 German Television Award and received a DAFfne for Best Editorial Work.

In recent years, Esther Gronenborn has significantly expanded her creative practice into the visual arts. She works intensively with AI-generated imagery, digital collage, and video installations. Her work blends photographic techniques with AI-driven image synthesis, incorporating cinematic tools such as temporal manipulation, montage, and symbolic layering. Her pieces have been exhibited at venues such as the Produzentengalerie Potsdam, and her installation The Institute was selected for the upcoming Labyrinth Festival in Słubice. Her AI-based films have been shown at international festivals, including the Project Odyssee and the renowned MetaMorph-Festival.

In addition to her work as a director, Esther Gronenborn is actively committed to equality and diversity in the film industry as a founding member and board member of Pro Quote Regie and Pro Quote Film. She is a member of the German and European Film Academy. Esther Gronenborn lives with her family near Berlin.
